Professional Knowledge

Teachers of science demonstrate an understanding of the curriculum, subject content, and the developmental needs of students by providing relevant learning experiences.

The purpose of the professional knowledge standard is to provide students with teachers whose mastery of content will ensure exceptional learning opportunities.  The primary goal of the standard is to confirm that teachers, through their comprehension of scientific principles and theories, can convey scientific concepts adequately to promote student understanding.  The central objective of the standard is to give confidence that science teachers will provide instruction based on evidence from scientific inquiry.

I have demonstrated mastery of scientific knowledge by earning an Associate’s Degree in Science from Virginia Western Community College and Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Hollins University. During my studies at Virginia Western I joined the Phi Eta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and served as Recording Officer during my senior year.  Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society of two year colleges which recognizes students for their academic achievement and promotes opportunities for them to grow as scholars and leaders.  Through my membership and service, I had opportunities to collaborate with fellow students of diverse backgrounds as we set and achieved the goal of earning Five Star Chapter status through research, service, and community education programs.

I have passed the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment, and completed the Praxis II exam for Biology with ETS Recognition of Excellence.
